I lived at Linwood Garden Apartments from the mid-50s to the early 70s. I remember watching the fire in the studio behind the apartment complex; it was a big event. I was quite young--6ish.
My cherished memories are from the time after the fire, specifically the early 60s. The ruins of the studio were known as "The Fields" to us kids from Linwood Gardens and the surrounding area. It was our unofficial playground. "The Fields" was a kids' paradise in which our imagination, sense of adventure, and commaraderie was unleashed unrestrained. We climbed into the studios and played within old backdrops, we made a "clubhouse" in the old guards building on Fletcher Avenue, we furnished the clubhouse with treasures from the studios and furniture which had been dumped in "the Fields." In the winter, we would ice-skate on puddles of ice and build fires (!). In the summer, the very-tall weeds were our "jungle." On 4th of July, we set off fire works.
We were only vaguely aware of the history of the place. Oh how I wish I had kept some of the artifacts we casually appropriated.
As an adult of this time I marvel at the unfettered freedom we had in this probably "dangerous" place. I get anxious when I recall climbing onto the roofs of the ruined, and mostly gutted buildings. I thank god that none of us were seriously hurt, but mostly I feel immense gratitude for the experience.
Zooey, our paths must have crossed. I'd love to hear from you, and Harry Hawkins: did you have a brother or cousin Joseph Hawkins? he was a classmate of mine from Madonna ('67). Chris, where exactly was Deal Appliances?
