I'm having Proustian/madelaine floods of Remembrances of Things Past, and it's almost overwhelming, and precious.
I can smell the lingering charred odor of the Studio Fire. I'm recalling how for years after the fire we used shards of burnt wood to write and draw on the concrete floor of the studio remains. I also smell the mildew of the back-drops and fabric left in the burnt-out abandoned buildings that we kids appropriated for our kid's wonderland--"The Fields."
I repeat that I shudder to think of how potentially dangerous our unfettered freedom was and my simultaneous gratitude for that experience.
That was typical life for kids everywhere back then: long days of unstructured freedom. "Go out and play" was what our parents said. That innnocence appears to be a thing of the past.
How special that our kid's world was in a place of such astonishing historical significance. Were the spirits of the vanished studio workers and stars watching over us? I like to think they were. And that they are happy with the valuable work being done by the Fort Lee Historical Society and Tom Meyers and everyone at the Film Commission.
Carol, I remember all of those names from Linwood Gardens and I fondly remember your brother Artie more than I remember you. Yes I was the kid in the catholic school uniform for sure. I suspect you are a few years older or younger than me.
